Bystanders in Barrie intervened when a Canadian Tire loss‑prevention officer was attacked by two suspected shoplifters after a theft incident on Mapleview Drive West.
Police were called to the store shortly after 7:30 p.m. The guard confronted the suspects, who were then held down by nearby shoppers until officers arrived.
Both suspects were apprehended. A 28‑year‑old woman faces theft under $5,000 and assault with intent to resist arrest, while a 41‑year‑old man is charged with assault.
The incident follows a May robbery in Gravenhurst where Sobeys staff helped officers detain three individuals who stole $3,000 in baby formula.
Separately, a 23‑year‑old man was arrested on Tuesday night for committing an indecent act on Dunlop Street West, between Miller and Tiffin Streets.
Police are asking the public for witnesses or dashcam footage from the area around 9 p.m. on Dunlop Street West and encourage anyone with information to contact the department.
