Clipboard hijacking has become a significant threat in the cyber world, where attackers use malware to monitor or intercept the contents of a user's clipboard. This is where copied text is stored for easy pasting. Among the various types of attacks, ClickFix has emerged as a particularly notorious one.
In a ClickFix attack, a user may be presented with a fake error message or a CAPTCHA verification test that appears to be legitimate. However, the true intention is to hijack the clipboard and trick the user into running malicious commands via the command line or run prompts. This can ultimately lead to the installation of malware on the system and the theft of sensitive data.
The Opera web browser has taken a significant step in addressing this threat by introducing a built-in protection feature called Paste Protect. This feature continuously monitors the clipboard in real-time and automatically blocks the pasting of malicious code. When a block occurs, a red icon appears in the address bar along with a warning that explains what happened.
Opera's Paste Protect feature is a first for major web browsers, providing native guards against clipboard hijacking. Currently, it is only available in the desktop versions of the browser and is enabled by default. It remains to be seen whether other major web browsers will follow suit and implement similar protections.
