Opera Introduces Built‑In Protection Against ClickFix Browser Attacks

Earlier this year a security firm identified a malicious browser extension that initiates a sophisticated attack known as ClickFix. The extension tricks users into installing it, then displays a counterfeit error prompt that offers a “fix” requiring the copy‑and‑paste of a command into the system’s command prompt.

ClickFix attacks rely on users executing the copied code, which can give attackers full control of the computer. The fake prompt often includes a bogus captcha that is designed to fail, prompting the victim to run the malicious command.

In response, the Opera browser has introduced a built‑in protection called Paste Protect. The feature monitors attempts to paste code that matches known malicious patterns and intervenes when a potential ClickFix attack is detected.

When Paste Protect suspects an attack, it presents a warning pop‑up that advises against copying the command and offers a button to close the tab. Users may choose “Show content” to view the first 120 characters of the flagged command for verification.

For users who need to proceed, Paste Protect includes a red “Hold to copy (unsafe)” button that requires a press of more than five seconds. The browser also allows the creation of a trusted‑site list, enabling automatic copying from sites that are verified as safe.

The warning mechanism mirrors protective prompts used by major operating systems, which block untrusted installations while still permitting knowledgeable users to override the block.

Opera’s detection leverages platform‑specific techniques for Linux, macOS, and Windows to identify script patterns associated with ClickFix attacks, blocking them before they reach the clipboard.

This addition builds on Opera’s existing Hijack Protection, which prevents websites from altering clipboard contents without consent, such as changing a copied URL to a malicious address.

Despite these safeguards, users remain the strongest line of defense. Avoid installing unknown extensions, refrain from clicking suspicious links, and never paste code into a command prompt unless its source and purpose are fully verified.
