Protester self-immolates outside UN headquarters in New York City

A man set himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters on Manhattan’s East 42nd Street during the evening rush hour on Thursday.

He placed a Tibetan flag on the sidewalk and ignited himself in full view of the UN’s surveillance cameras, while nearby signs reading “China Out of Tibet” were also recovered.

New York Police Department officers arrived quickly, securing the area and collecting the protest material as emergency responders rushed to treat the victim.

Fire and smoke billow from a vehicle on the street near a modern building, with traffic signals visible in the foreground.

The individual was transported to Bellevue Hospital with severe burns and was later pronounced dead.

Self‑immolation has been used as a form of protest in Tibet for more than a decade, with over 150 recorded cases since 2009, driven by opposition to Chinese administration of the region.

The movement advocating for Tibetan independence seeks the restoration of sovereignty to the Tibet Autonomous Region and the reinstatement of authority to the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.
