Canada Implements 10% Tariff on Imported Canned Goods to Safeguard Vegetable Growers Interests

The Canadian government has implemented a 10% tariff on imported canned goods, effective July 1. The move aims to protect the country's growers and canners, according to Federal Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

Affected goods include items such as Lebanese chickpeas and Filipino beans, as stated in a regulatory notice. Importers of these goods, including domestic grocers, can expect to face increased costs, which may be passed on to consumers.

The tariff applies to select imports of canned black beans, chickpeas, corn, carrots, green beans, mixed vegetables, peas, pinto beans, red beans, wax beans, and white beans. The surtax is in effect for 200 days, until January 17, 2027.

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal will conduct an inquiry to determine if longer-term measures are warranted. In the meantime, the tariff aims to increase the cost of importing certain canned vegetable goods.

Canned goods from the U.S., Mexico, Chile, and Israel are exempt from the tariff, while imports from other countries, including Egypt, Morocco, and Asian states, are subject to the 10% surtax.

The impacted imports were worth $109 million last year. Data suggests that the Canadian canned vegetable industry is facing significant imports, with a 22% increase in imports from 2023 to 2025.

The tariff was prompted by appeals from the Canadian Association of Vegetable Growers and Processors, who sought protection for the domestic industry.
