Elon Musk has condemned New York City's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, following a divisive Independence Day address on Friday morning. Mamdani's speech, which came before President Trump's address to the nation from Mount Rushmore, sparked widespread controversy.
Mamdani surrounded himself with foreigners during the address and lambasted American citizens who value their national heritage, accusing them of racism and xenophobia. He claimed that America is an "arena of supremacy" where only a select few are allowed freedom and that not all citizens are created equal.
Mamdani used the address to attack various institutions and groups, including ICE, capitalism, and the wealthy. He specifically targeted figures like Elon Musk, saying, "We see the wealthiest country in the history of the world, one where children go to sleep hungry while the world's first trillionaire hungers for more."
Mamdani also referenced issues such as health insurance, landlords, and tax dollars spent on "bombs and bailouts," as well as elections being sold to "the highest bidder." He emphasized the need for greater equality and social justice.
Musk responded to Mamdani's comments, pointing out that the mayor has built nothing and is a "taker, never a maker." Musk noted that Mamdani has a quarter-million-dollar salary and lives in a historic Upper East Side residence, paid for by the people of New York City.
Mamdani's background has been widely criticized, with many questioning his credentials and achievements. After graduating from Bowdoin College with a degree in Africana Studies, Mamdani went on to become a liberal activist, a failed rapper in Uganda, a campaign manager for a failed State Senate race, and a nonprofit financial counselor.
Musk's comments have sparked a heated debate about the role of government and the impact of divisive rhetoric on society.
