Jockey Frankie Dettori has been injured in a car crash just weeks before he was due to return to the saddle.
The 55-year-old suffered a broken thumb and several broken ribs in the crash in Newmarket, Suffolk, on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, his car was hit towards the back of the car on the passenger side, causing it to spin out of control and flip over.
Emergency services attended the scene and Dettori was taken to hospital, where he remains under observation.
Dettori officially retired earlier this year, but was due to take part in the charity Legends race at Doncaster's St Leger meeting.
He last raced in the UK in October 2023, when he won the Champion Stakes at Ascot on King of Steel.
Dettori has long been recognised as one of the greatest flat jockeys in horse racing history.
In a statement, his management company said that Dettori was involved in a road traffic accident in Newmarket on the evening of July 1st.
Another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Dettori was driving, causing it to spin and flip.
Dettori was taken to hospital, where he was found to have sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb.
His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further scans and observation.
Dettori would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses, and wider medical team caring for him.
His focus is now on resting and recovering, and his management company respectfully asks that his privacy is respected at this time.
No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update.
